Fed up of crowds, car fumes and the busy commute, or simply in need of an escape to the country? Park yourself up for a nature-filled getaway at Callander Woods Holiday Park, a family-friendly site in the small Perthshire town of Callander in central Scotland. On the edge of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, Callander Woods is a top spot for experiencing the Scottish highlands. Hikers will want to head to one of the 21 munros within the park, pick their way along the Rob Roy Way as it passes through Callander, or follow the Birds of Prey Trail, keeping a weather (or should that be feather?) eye out for owls, eagles, osprey and buzzards.Of course, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs isn’t just for hikers – you can explore the Great Trossachs forest, go for a trip in a Canadian canoe, try wake surfing or paddleboarding or, if you’re feeling less energetic, take a Segway safari.Back on site, you can still stay close to nature by making your way to the banks of the River Teith and casting a line. If you’re lucky enough to land a big one, slap it on the barbecue for dinner and chow down in peace and quiet among the trees. Nothing biting? No worries – there are plenty of restaurants within 25 minutes that can make you feel better about your failed fishing ambitions.

Local attractions
This area isn’t called Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park for nothing: the shores of Loch Lomond are 45 minutes from Callander Woods Holiday Park. Make the drive for boat trips, the gardens at Balloch Castle Country Park, and the aquarium. There’s plenty near here to keep the kids entertained – they can have a poke around the Hamilton Toy Collection (one of the largest privately owned toy collections in the UK), meet the animals at Blair Drummond Safari Park or fall back in time on a tour of the stunning Loch Katrine aboard the Steamship Sir Walter Scott.Grownups can find entertainment in a barrel of nearby distilleries. Start with tour and tasting at McQueen Gin (five minutes from site), then venture further afield under the careful watch of your designated driver for Deanston Distillery (10 minutes) and Glengoyne Distillery (40 minutes) for more tastings. If you’re up for a longer car journey, day trips to Glasgow and Edinburgh, both roughly an hour away, come highly recommended: museums, galleries, gardens, historical sites and a host of top-notch eateries will make either jaunt worthwhile. Sound like your absolute nightmare? Stick close to site at the Tank Drive Challenge, Doune Castle, or with a nice peaceful day of fishing, all within 15 minutes of Callander Woods.
