How much HP can fuel line handle? ›

SAE J30R7 is carburetor rated fuel hose and should only be used in limited runs up to 50 psi. SAE J30R9 is fuel Injection rated fuel hose which can handle up to 100 PSI.

Required fuel pressure can vary depending on your vehicle's engine and fuel system. Carbureted engines may require as little as 28 kPa (4 PSI), while modern multipoint fuel injected high-performance engines can require as much as 414 kPa (60 PSI).

Use a wrench or socket set to loosen the fuel line connection. Crank the engine for a few seconds to allow the air to escape, being cautious of fuel spills. Tighten the fuel line connection when you observe a steady fuel flow without air bubbles.

Up to 800HP = 5/8" or -10 AN. Up to 1200HP = 3/4" or -12 AN.

For instance, an 8AN feed line and 6AN return line on a 1000 horsepower gasoline or race gas powered LS with 30psi is sufficient. However, on an E85 combo, we recommend a 10AN feed and an 8AN return minimum for the same setup minus the fuel change.

If the diameter is too small: you won't be able to support your horsepower goal. If the diameter is too big: the lines will take longer to pressurize. If your pump can't maintain the pressure, it can drop during times of high demand, leading to engine damage.

In a racing version even a naturally aspirated inline 4 could run up to 15K and would likely be running 11-12K in normal racing. With those kinds of rev's you could get into 300-400 hp. Normally aspirated at 7K you are talking 200 to 250 max.
