Sewell and East streets in Ludlow and crashed into a pole He owned Matthys Volkswagen Repair shop for 16 years and re tired in 1981 Born in Haarlem Holland he served in the Dutch Army during World War Tarnower 82 of 102 Spadina Parkway neurologist and psychia trist died Wednesday at home He was an instuctor in neurolo gy and psychiatry at Albany Medi cal College from 1939 He also had a private practice in the two fields in Pittsfield from 1936 He was an attending neurologist and psychiatrist at Berkshire Med ical Center from 1936 to 1988 in troducing the first electroencepha lography unit to the hospital in 1946 and organizing the first EEG laboratory or 21 years he was also phys ician in charge of the state alco holism clinic at the hospital He had published work in New England Journal of Medicine Born in New York City he gra duated from Syracuse University in 1929 and New York Medical College in 1933 He served his in tership at lower Hospital in New York City in from 1933 Robert Killough Conn hospital cleared in death HARTORD (AP) The state Department of Consumer Protec tion has cleared Hartford Hospital of any negligence or wrongdoing in the death of a 29 year old anes thesiologist who died in April from a self injected drug overdose find any negligence or lack of control on the part of the William Ward director of the drug con trol division said Tuesday On April 25 David Leyda a doc tor at the hospital took an over dose of fentanyl a potent and wi dely used painkiller The state medical office later ruled the death accidental and hospital officials concluded that Leyda had been abusing the drug The Department of Consumer Protection found no reason to crit icize the system of dis pensing drugs to doctors for use on patients investigation revealed the system was working the way it should Ward said are ways drugs can be diverted in any system no matter how tight it is Medical officials have free access to the drugs and the sys tem can only prevent diversion to a certain After death hospital of ficials pointed out that fentanyl abuse is somewhat common and 18 other anesthesiologists across the country have died from over doses of the drug in the past three years and an undercover investigator testified that Delbert Ward 59 of Stockbridge confessed to suffocat ing his brother William Ward 64 on June 6 Ward one of four brothers who live in the rural town of Stock bridge about 25 miles southeast of Syracuse is charged with second degree murder in his death statement to police which was used as the basis for the charge was entered into evi dence but Eppolito ruled it was closed to the public Onondaga County Assistant Medical Examiner Humphrey Germaniuk told the judge he found a benign tumor the size of a golf ball in neck and others in his kidney and prostate that could have been cancerous He say whether he discovered any terminal illness Germaniuk said he ruled Wil liam death a homicide after state police informed him of spotted the man going overboard about 12:55 pm said Coast Guard Seaman Steve Aitkins in Boston The man who was not immediately identified was wearing gray shorts and was thought to be about 25 years old The man and three other people were on a 22 foot motorboat in the bay off Scraggy Neck about 4 miles north of the cruise liner Ber muda Star which ran aground Sunday About 45 minutes later another fishing vessel using a fish spotting device located a large object floating about six feet from the bottom of the bay A volunteer diver dove to see if it was the man but found nothing Aitkins said
